Text Box: Message to Parents of College Students
It can be quite disconcerting to have a child appearing in Court for a misdemeanor charge when you live out of state or even just out of town.  It is also a logistical problem for the parent to physically appear with the Student in Court to help guide them through this process.  I have represented students with the knowledge and assistance of their parents for almost two decades.  With the students consent, I keep the parents informed of the process, the final disposition, and the requirements to complete that sentence and/or school, in order for your child to complete his/her requirements of District Court.  I can accept payment for attorney fees on my website for the convenience of the parents (who normally pay the legal fees) and who would like for representation to begin immediately.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me regarding your child's situation.

Text Box: Appearing in Tuscaloosa County District Court
Your first appearance is called an "arraignment" at which you can enter a guilty plea, request the case be set for a trial where you can call and question witnesses, or otherwise resolve your case.  Your case is called in an order determined by the Prosecutor.  Cases of individuals represented by attorneys are generally handled first as a courtesy by the District Attorneys Office to those attorneys so they can appear before other Judges on other court dockets throughout Tuscaloosa County.  If you appear by yourself you can anticipate being in Court from 1 to 4 hours depending on the number of people present.  Unless you resolve your case prior to trial, it will be set for a trial at a later date.  Your case may be continued for weeks or months at the discretion of the Prosecutor.  If the Complainant against you fails to appear, the Prosecutor may or may not dismiss your case.  Even if you are convicted in Tuscaloosa County District Court you have a legal right to "appeal" your case "de novo" to the Circuit Court of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.  You must file a notice of appeal within fourteen (14) days of your conviction.  On appeal your case will be tried as though it was the very first time it has been heard.  In Circuit Court you are entitled to a JURY TRIAL but ONLY if you "check the box" requesting a jury trial on the appeal form provided by the District Court Clerk's Office.
